ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The painting is a freestyle portrait with acrylics on paper. The highlight for me to be frequently working this way as an artist, is the element of surprise. In my journey to turn references into muscle memory, there are times I surprise myself by creating portraits that have an uncanny resemblance to someone known. This one happened to resemble (mostly the eyes) a colleague I knew briefly, and remember fondly for the set of paints she got me as a gift. People know her as Nayan, which ironically means eyes.

Anya's parents are both fine artists in their own right, and it's safe to say the apple didn't fall very far from the tree. If you knew Anya, however, you would also know it wouldn't take very long for Anya to eat that apple. When she's not waltzing over the canvas with her paintbrushes, she can be found doing her parkour training at Vanarshala for a possible post-apocalyptic survival scenario involving running away from other primates and beating them at their own game with superior jumpmanship (if there is such a word). Anya's exposure to art began when she was barely 3 and the privilege of crayons to walls gave her the freedom to explore her style of work at a very early age. Subtly influenced by her father's consistent use of bold lines, coupled with her mother's defined graphic visuals, her work oscillates between the abstract and fine and showcases the skill of freestyling with oils, pastels, acrylics, pencils across paper, canvas and MDF boards as she further continues exploring the infinite permutations of how color and a plain canvas can create something beautiful.
