Many of Stephen Harkola’s abstract paintings are focused on pushing land and seascapes to more primeval forms. Earth, Water, Air, Fire were used to explain the nature of all matter in ancient times and provide the inspiration for the works. Stephen applies paint using brushes, rollers, pour, spray, knife, sponge, hands, blowers, layer upon layer. "Stream of consciousness, dancing around the fire, there is nothing better". Except, some of his paintings are more representational by design, left brain fighting to gain control over the right. There is tension. Both are synergistic and support his Portrait and Abstract Figure work, also on Saatchi at Artist website
