About The Artwork

From a photo of an ancient sculpture of classical beauty - the famed Nefertiti, a Pharaoh of ancient Egypt. I'm interested in ideas of race, especially African race. This sculpture was made thousands of years ago, and it has reddish brown skin. But in terms of modern racial stereotyping, her fine features suggest she is a Caucasian - according to classical scholars who could not envisage a Black race could be responsible for the marvels of ancient Egypt. That was before scientists discovered we are all descended from a common ancestor - and she was African! So is the skin that colour because it was the closest match? or artistic license? The process of painting revealed how beautifully crafted the original sculpture is. The fine tendons of the neck I noticed, then the muscles in the cheeks. I'd already traced the somewhat severe, if classic bow-shape, line of the lips. This stern look is undermined by the more subtle laugh-lines in her cheeks. Like Mona Lisa's, this smile only reveals itself when you study it.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
