Nicole Seated 01 Print

Nicole is a Portland, OR based model that was a delight to paint and to know - a distinctive figure coupled with incredibly considered and aesthetically pleasing poses, she became one of my favorite models over just a couple of sessions. Here, we view Nicole seated on a stool from a low angle, opening up opportunities for some interesting perspective and foreshortening which make the image unique. Arms are left hanging behind her and both legs are supported at different heights, creating asymmetry in the pose. She is leaning back with a slightly arched back making her chest lift upwards and her gaze is off to the side in a controlled, stoic expression. I chose to approach this pose with black gouache on textured, brown craft paper (the reverse side is smooth), using a thick brush to make my bold, broad marks. Varying the amount of paint applied, I have areas of thick, dense tone where the brush was heavily laden for the dark areas, and areas of soft tone, which was especially appropriate for shadows, achieved by using a dry brush effect. This pose was perfect for highlighting the volume of the figure and I added some very dark tone behind the model as the chiaroscuro helped give even more depth and volume. It was done in Portland, OR in a small atelier where a few people gather once a week for figure drawing.

 All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings.
