ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The artwork shows a view of a sleeping area in the city of Riga. A path among the trees, far from city lights, and a huge starry sky above us. For a city man, seeing the stars is a miracle. The modern city is hiding more and more from the darkness of the night behind the armor of illumination. But this silent magic of a clear summer and starry night, which accidentally caught me on the way home, was very impressing. I felt all the fragility of this moment. The stars are not going anywhere. But, living in a city, a person can completely forget that they are. The artwork was painted from memory, with quick strokes, somewhere thick and pasty, but somewhere light. The picture is dark, shades of deep blue, cinnamon, black. It can be attributed to impressionism. Oil on canvas on carton, 2019.

Searching for my own path in painting took me a certain time. It has passed nine years since my first attempts to paint. However, during last several years I have started feeling self-assured, as my works reached desired level of skilfulness and artistic approach, and I really started liking them. Currently my love to post-impressionist artists' paintings became especially strong. I am often inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Edouard Vuillard, Albert Marquet, and Latvian artist Janis Valters. Most of all I value coloristic beauty of their works as well as the artists’ ability to show the weather conditions and the state of the nature with one brush stroke. Now I look into the future with greater confidence, think over new creative plans, and expect fulfilling them!
