A full moon is glimpsed through a gap in the branches of a tree, briefly turning the tree into a nightmarish face. The sky is deep, dark blue, but it is stained red near the horizon by the lights of the nearby motorway and town. This is one of a series of nocturnes I painted some time ago. They were intended to explore the sensation of walking through fields after dark and are disorienting and otherworldly while remaining familiar. They all have very delicate spatial relationships within them; in this case there are trees in the middle ground which echo the main tree and make it familiar but give a beautiful sense of space. Like all my work, it is made from top quality, professional grade materials which should keep it looking good for decades to come. This painting makes particular use of contrasting and exotic blacks. The foreground was built up from a sledgehammer Ivory Black with a medium added to make it more physical and then I added glazes of the most intense black of them all (Spinel Black) on top to pull it as far into the foreground as possible. Elsewhere I made extensive use of transparent black earth colours to give life and delicacy and control the spatial relationships. The painting is on a simple box canvas with edges painted a deep, intense black. This gives it a modern feel and means it can be hung straight away or can be framed to suit its new home.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
