ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Scicluna seems to be embracing his sexual impulses with the Nomad series, whilst he has tried to attempt to purify the subject he has at the same time managed to perceive a more perverse vision with the inclusion of the rabbit heads. Scicluna has tried to create a strange authority behind the Nomads, by using the female form in a seductive manner, he has tried to achieve a higher status with the subject, this is seen in everyday life, just as one would when trying to attract a partner or mate. By having a rabbits head instead of humans it raises the fact that beauty is, at the end of the day superficial, but a natural perception. Scicluna has created an awkwardness with these paintings as there is a sexual instinct associated with the Nomads and this causes the viewer to question their thoughts relating to the suggestive feelings that the female body may have when presented in such a manner and context.

I am a painter based in London, England, working primarily with oils, my work is predominantly portraiture and figurative, embracing the solitary of the unknown and showing the awkwardness of contrasting matters. While studying a foundation degree at Central Saint Martins I became fascinated with the Art and Existentialism movement from the post-war area in Paris, this made an everlasting impression towards me and my artwork. My more recent work questions the notion of identity, shaped by a variety of subjects, focusing mainly on models in the fashion industry, I am inspired by numerous artists including Francis Bacon, Alberto Jacometti, Hannah Yata, and more recently Joseph Lee.
