ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I was inspired by the work of photographer Wendy Oshi who did some amazing work with my cousin Tawina Munthali. This painting is as a result of their work. I could not think of any fitting title to this but Nubian Queen as the composition clearly depicts African royalty.

I am a self-taught artist mainly working with acrylics, graphite, and charcoal. I have never been to an art school and so I consider my drawing and painting abilities as inborn. I started drawing at a very young age and took pride in being the student who did most of the lesson drawings on behalf of my teachers. I seriously started to paint in the year 2010. That was during a time I went to work for a tourism company in the rural areas of Blantyre, Malawi. Being away from home and the comforts of the city I turned to art on my off days to keep myself busy. Since then it has been a great love affair and there has been no looking back. As I have progressed in my work I have realised that my strongest and favourite genre is portraiture but I also work in other genres like wildlife, landscape, stills and abstract. I work from home here in Coventry, England, in a small bedroom that serves as both my study and art studio. It serves its purpose well, at least for now.
