About The Artwork

The painting shows my memory of the coast in Porto when I saw the ocean for the first time in my life. Big, loud and beautiful, it hit the rocks and I stood enchanted. I could stare at the waves for hours and contemplate their movement, changing colors... I am thinking of paintings by William Turner, who in order to feel the power of a storm at sea more strongly told to attach to the mast of the ship. I also think about the fact that during a storm in the open sea, travelers dream about being on the shore. The coast at Porto is very diverse, part of the beach is sandy and a large part has various rocks - granites, marbles and black volcanic rocks - a wealth of structures and a geological festival. This canvas is the beginning of a series with the ocean.

I move between different styles, combining abstraction with figuration. Concerning themes and my color palette, I have no restrictions, with one exception: I avoid dramatism in depicted situations. Only the scale between extensive backgrounds and minor human figures or vehicles is constant. I am inspired by Dutch painting, especially by Peter Breughel. I like to think of my paintings as a kind of poetry without words. http://www.artminnow.com/index.php/2017/04/14/a-conversation-with-grazyna-smalej/
