The “Oceanides” oil on canvas 91x61cm, my painting finished in lockdown. The fountain known in Twickenham as “the naked ladies“, is a group of Carrara marble sculptures done in Italy by Oscar Spalmach around 1900, commissioned by a banker in Surrey. Subsequently acquired by Sir Ratan Tata for his garden design at York House in Twickenham, now under the ownership of Richmond Council. It was restored in 2007 and cherished by the local residents, as it is mostly a hidden treasure. I wanted the capture the light from behind and the glimmers of the low sun beams to unify the otherwise busy composition of the 7 Nymphs and Venus riding a carriage pulled by 2 winged horses.

Doina’s background is architecture by profession but the representation through drawing and painting was explored and studied from a very early age, manipulating the artistic language directly within her architectural presentations. Inspired by her new location around Hampton Court, London, surrounded by powerfully inspiring settings, she resumed experimenting with her oil painting studies from 2016. By taking further Master Classes, exploring the landscape en plein air in her local area by the river Thames, Richmond and Bushy Parks or during her various travels abroad, depicting the defining sense of a place, exploring figurative art and portraiture in her neo-impressionist style, veering into abstract, introducing elements from classical composition in her landscapes to create focus, painting is a continuous process of invention and mastery. Doina explores capturing and encapsulating the transience of a moment, in sumptuous brush strokes, using oil colours. The artworks emanate a sense of Now, in the Present, while playing on memory with the feel of the Old Masters decanted through the layering of time, capturing the essence of the moment. She is portraying the illusion of movement through time and space, extracting the sublime. Doina's preoccupation is to produce anti-anxiety artworks, a few touches of magic dispersed through balance and harmony in the composition, experimenting with new techniques. Launching her art career at the Salon Des Refuses in 2017, Doina continues to exhibit in museums and international exhibitions. Her artworks are in prominent private art collections and in one museum in a permanent collection.
