ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I've always been a fan of medieval and renaissance portraits. I was inspired to make my own version of King Henry VIII after leafing through various books of medieval portraits by Holbein. I hope the viewer will be amused by the contradiction between the traditional portraits of Henry and my modern interpretation. The medium of acrylic is suited to my rapid painting style using multiple layers of paint to create a fun spin on renaissance and medieval imagery.

James Lang (b.1987, London) currently lives and works in London having recently returned from Beijing after almost 5 years. He graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 2011 and Camberwell College of Art in 2013 with an MA in Illustration. Living in China was a transformative experience. The distance made him feel closer to the culture he left behind. This led to a series of works inspired by British history and culture. His paintings are inspired by medieval art, literature and a fondness for childhood cartoons and vintage colouring book images. The paintings are often thickly layered, ranging from brightly coloured pop art to blurry monochrome images, Varying in sentiment between innocence and satire.
