ABOUT THE ARTWORK

How do you get unstuck? Do you keep pushing against the problem until it gives? Do you walk away to get some clarity and perspective? I do both. I push and push until I get completely frustrated and want to toss my problem out in the garbage. And then I come back to it next day and realize that it wasn't a problem at all. All the pushing and shoving frayed it at the edges and a new shape emerged. I am giving myself this week as a mini artist residency. Time to re-group after the mural painting project, to reflect, write, plot new directions and nurture new ideas. I started what was supposed to be fast and loose experimental sketches but nothing seemed to work, or at least it didn't feel like anything interesting was happening. I made 4 of them and the last one I hated the most. Really hated it. And this morning I caught a glimpse of that most offending little painting, and I was struck by the loose and fast marks and that noon light high contrast I am always drawn toward. I stared at the painting for a while, realizing how much it has in common with the large "Platform" painting from February. I had a new direction that has been foreshadowed by the new and experimental painting from late winter and here was a reminder that I need to get back to those ideas! My ugly duckling might have not turned into a swan overnight, but allowed me to think about a whole new series and now I can't wait to stretch some canvases and get to it.

Tatyana Ostapenko’s paintings record the daily lives of people who usually don’t make it into official historical records. She uses images from her native Ukraine to speak about universal human experiences. Her work expresses empathy and hope in the face of adversity. After a few years of working as a Russian-English interpreter while making art, Tatyana is delighted to dedicate herself to a full-time studio practice. In response to the pandemic, she has moved her studio to her dining room and has been using Instagram Live to paint while hosting conversations with other homebound artists. Tatyana’s artwork has been exhibited at the Geoje International Art Festival in South Korea, Odessa Contemporary Art Biennial in Ukraine, Governors Island Art Fair in NYC, Cape Cod Art Museum in Dennis, MA, Littman Gallery in Portland and Locker 50b in Richmond, VA. She is a recipient of Professional Development Grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Oregon Arts Commission. Her paintings have been purchased by public, corporate and private collections, including the City of Seattle and Stumptown Coffee. Born and raised in the Soviet Union, Tatyana currently lives in Portland, OR. She holds a BFA in Studio Practice from Portland State University.
