ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a view across the fields from my studio, so it is very familiar. The path curves around beside the hedge echoing the lines made by tractor wheels across the land. After harvest, the stalks left are a lovely golden green colour. In the foreground are the crispy stems of cow parsley and other dried grasses. I thought they add a sense of the near and far to the painting. In the distance can be seen the rows of hedges marking other field boundaries. We have flocks of pigeons here in East Anglia - a couple made there way into the painting, and gave it the title Orange Flight. The canvas itself is 15x19inches framed 22.5x26inches and is ready to hang, and the artwork ships in a crate for best protection of painting and frame. Thank you for looking.

The landscape is my main source of subject for painting - particularly the orderly impact on the landscape of human habitation and farming. The framework imposed by fencing hedges ditches etc and the impact these divisions have on the land is always interesting. Colours lent to the land for a few months by growing crops is another element. The rather harsh lemon of the rape or mustard crops, the cool blue of a linseed field, the effervescent mixture of echinacea flowers - all these colours provide problems for an artist. While they are very dramatic , visually they don’t sit well with the native trees and hedge colours, but I am drawn to them as a subject on exactly that account. This is what inspires my work - colour.
