Organic 1 Print

This piece is the first in a series that I call "Organics." It is called that because I work with the medium organically. I let the paint act as paint and do what paint does. For the background, I let the paint find its place. I encourage it to move in a certain direction, but the paint follows its own path. I then wait for the background to tell me what the foreground flower will be. When I was younger, I controlled every brush stroke on the canvas. I often had architectural backgrounds (I studied architecture at Cal). I wanted a certain outcome, and I worked hard to get it. You can see examples of this on my website . I've always had an affinity for flowers, but having them in my work often brought derision. Critics would call it "feminine" -- well, guess what? I am a woman, thus I embrace my femininity. In this series, I am freeing myself of my inner (and outer) critic. I'm not listening to those voices any more. This work is large and dramatic. It opens up a room by providing alot of depth. The paintings in this series look spectacular when hung together.
