"Oz The Great and Terrible" Print

Getting to know the character Oscar Diggs, aka the Wizard of Oz, is described in the book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' as being bald! Wups. It's been said, and from his own lips no less, that Oscar was born the itinerant son of a politician. A traveling ventriloquist, magic man, and palm-reader in his younger years. He exceeded the highest limits of flimflamery duping the grinning hayseeds, Bible-belt yokels, and Middle West simpleton--'guts of America'. His wallet was well fed. Hysterically the tethers of his hot-air-balloon were tangled. Perhaps this was a simple oversight, otherwise there may have been some dislike of Oscar and his flamboyant, chintzy ways, which led to the Carny King being sequestered by the crisp, brisk, high-altitude winds of the Kansas stratosphere never to be seen again. Bailum & Barney's traveling Show lost a considerable amount of proceeds after the disappearance of their second biggest performance, but eventually made up the losses through the purchase of an overweight, Bengalese tiger. Naturally when he landed in the land of Oz Oscar marveled the equally exploitable, dewy-eyed populace. The gullible rubes marched their happy, simpleton selves, along with their contemporary emperor, up the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, where their potentate proceeded to depose the ruling monarchy--King Pastorious--through undisclosed mean. The King's daughter Princess Ozma, an infant at the time, Oscar exported, into the dubious hands of Mombi, the witch, in an effort to blot out the authentic monarchy. Incidentally, Ozma's gender was flipped, by means of enchantment, and her memory wiped: she was left spotless of any familial history and her claim to the throne buried. Oscar was a warped, frustrated, misanthropist who was desperate enough to send a little girl, along with her chaotic cast of emptyheaded friends off to assassinate the Witch of The West. Oscar is an ominous soul, as phony as a wooden nickel, as clingy as a leach, and he'd sell his own mother for the right price.
