About The Artwork
This piece was inspired by the rich textures and colors of the South Carolina coast, particularly those found in the beautiful palmetto, which manages to look both rugged and elegant at the same time. The leafy part alone exhibits colors that range from the bright greens in the crown to the grayish purples in the dead fronds that hang beneath the crown. This painting is a depiction of an actual palmetto grove on Edisto Beach, Edisto Island, South Carolina. I used a ballpoint pen in conjunction with watercolors to home in on and accentuate certain textures that especially caught eye. I also liked the way the water-soluble ink from the pen blended with the watercolors to create particularly rich purples and blues.

I often find inspiration in the outdoors, painting and drawing en plain air. Before I settle on a place and subject, I always have to roam about for some time, "shopping" for a scene that I find particularly compelling. A major component of my process is physicality, which includes experiencing a place through multiple senses. The smell of freshly cut grass and the feel of the sun's warmth on my skin, for example, can affect me powerfully. I try to paint my experience, including my emotions and non-visual sensations.
