About The Artwork

My painting Paradise Lost references the epic poem by the 17th-century English poet John Milton, but is inspired by Neville Shute's 1957 post-apocalyptic novel "On the Beach". The figure could be a contemporary Adam having terrible nightmares about what the future holds, whilst sleeping after eating the forbidden fruit and having lustful sex with Eve, prior to being cast out of Eden with the archangel Michael’s words that Adam may find "A paradise within thee, happier far." There is also a Walt Whitman poem entitled "On The Beach at Night", describing how frightening an approaching cloud bank seemed at night to the poet's child, blotting the stars out one by one, as the father and child stood on the beach on Massachusetts' North Shore.

Born in the UK in Manchester- now working from my Studio in St Ives. My oil paintings explore aspects of MELANCHOLIA using traditional methods of oil paint on canvas and on wooden panels. I work initially from pen and ink drawings that combine elements of my own figurative drawing with my photographs and found images. Working directly onto the support with oil glazes, I use these subverted images as the basis for a loose and immediate style of painting. Consequently the oil paintings have a freshness of execution despite the melancholic themes.
