Second in the series of transcriptions working out of darkness towards a lightened palette. Velasquez has always been a huge influence on me, and it has been important for me to transform his aesthetic into colour work. The people he described have an urgent, modern look in their eyes, which can be brought up to today by framing.

What interests me as an artist is the process and choices of creation. I choose to paint neither from life (although I practice with portraits and transcriptions) nor from imagination. I paint out of colour, allowing it's inherent lawfulness to define the content of my work. This approach finds its closest kinship with some abstract painters, but I always seek to give my work a motif, an image. What I offer here is a direction which seeks to touch something of the essential in human experience via the medium of colour.
