This is an ancient Dorset Holloway, a green pathway that has been worn down over centuries by the tramp of feet and hooves over the sandstone floor. The track has been eroded15 foot below the surrounding fields, and the ancient hedgerow has closed over it like the tracery in the roof of a cathedral. It has a still mystery, redolent with the ghosts of those who came this way of old, and I have attempted to describe this quiet energy and the encounter with the light at the end of the path. I am keen to avoid the greens and the earth colours that merely describe rather than express the feeling of being in that special place. I want to bring the immediacy of the situation to light through an intuitive range of colours in order to carry the viewer, by a shock of recognition, into this remarkable gully. I have spent much of the Lockdown exploring these Holloways in paintings and drawings.

My work embraces both the decorative and the observed. I draw passionately in a large Bible like sketchbook of which I have almost 50, going back one a year to my student days at Oxford. I print with small lino cuts made from these sketches, which I then collage to make a bigger composition. I love the definition of lino, and the lack of fussy detail. The figures that emerge are more archetypes than individuals with an inner life. I have worked as an independent artist designer, painting landscapes & portraits, engravings & prints, & I design & handprint textiles and wallpapers. I am a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Artist Member of the Royal Western Academy, Visiting Tutor at West Dean College. I have always been keen to demystify and disseminate the role of the arts, co-founding the first Open Studio Weeks in Britain in 1983, in Oxfordshire, and the Lyme Regis ArtsFest in 2003.
