ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This artist self-portrait expresses my journey from religion back to art. Art is spiritual. I hope the viewer will experience freedom from religion to be who they were created to be. To rediscover their true self between the waters above and the waters below. May it be a gateway of rebirth into new life, their creative self, ascending above all adversity. I selected this topic after 20 years of not creating art. I did some reflection and identified the symbolism and meaning within the artwork that supports my personal resurrection as an artist, rediscovered identity of life, fun, and my true personality.

Paper bag sketches – this is where it all began for Jason. His first drawings found themselves on cut up brown paper bags, carefully cut into squares by his mother. Jason would soon become a known child prodigy in Kentucky and attend the state’s prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts as a teen. Now at 47, the emerging artist approaches a blank canvas with meditative mindfulness to create a spiritual flow in his pieces. It is what Jason calls a ‘divine dance.’ Using acrylic paint as his base, he mixes dance, drawing, painting, airbrush, typography and graphic design principles to express an interplay of multiple layers and textures.
