ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The image size is 46 x 70 ; the paper sheet is 55 x 76 cm so there is a natural border . I began a series of paintings during lockdown ; experinmenting with pure watercolour and moving into mixing techniques , going back & forth between watercolor & acrylic of which this is an example . The original image came from an old (old) family photograph. I am very drawn to these types of scenes : people in a natural setting, idylls , nature & people etc . .. and the tensions underlying the apparent tranquility .

am British artist based in Brussels since 1995. I completed my fine art degree in the United Kingdom in 1988 and have since worked and exhibited in Europe. My subject matter is an emotional response to observations of the everyday world : people, objects and landscape. I hope my artwork evokes similar emotions in the viewer that I feel: tenderness, longing, fascination for the world. A love of the complex and intimate beauty that painting creates. Paintings are based on observational drawings, my own photographic and film archive as well as anonymous films and snapshots found by chance. A multi-layered approach in the painting process means the image is further edited and changed: the original can be unrecognisable, deliberately buried & virtually invisible or a ghost-like remain, an echo. The finished painting is a suggestive composite with an open-ended, multifaceted reading. I have written more extensively about individual paintings on the saatchi website ; they give details about medium and process as well as some of my own thoughts and initial inspiration . Please feel free to comment as I like the stimulus of exchange and thank you for looking .
