All summer I have pots of petunia blooming around our building. They are colorful, dependable and hardy. Hardy is important when you live at a higher altitude. 7,100 feet in the Rocky Mountains means temperatures can dip into the low 30's or even high 20's any month of the year. Pink Petunias was pa...

Artist Susan Spohn describes herself as a gardener recreating in paint the magic she feels when in the presence of flowers, critters and nature. Painting memories, visions and whimsy, her favorite medium is oil paint. She paints on wood panels using bristle brushes, painting knives, turpentine and varnish. Her paintings of textural garden scenes often include animals. They are not always obvious, but rather as in nature; in plain sight, but hidden. She lives in Salida, Colorado, a small artistic town that a lot of artists call home; and who can blame them? Spohn has a quaint second floor studio on E Street. Her view includes telephone poles, alleys, backyards, trees, gardens and assorted wildlife. She reports that this is a normal view in Salida, but she finds it inspirational and somehow magic happens. The artist has worked in several mediums over the years. She began selling her art at various art shows, shops and galleries in 1989. Later this year, Spohn will have a one woman showing of her art at the Steamplant’s Paquette Gallery during the month of October. She is presently creating new paintings for this show. You can view Spohn’s paintings by appointment, at an outdoor art festival, or visit her website:
