This painting examines the effects of light falling upon soft, cotton fabric. The delicate forms are revealed through the pale bleaching of natural light which enters from a nearby studio window. Vermeer, a frequent reference. The painting involved many alterations and much work to enable its conclusion. I enjoy painting from observed visual information and this painting forms part of a series exploring fabric and its emotional and dramatic qualities. This painting may offer the viewer the chance to dwell upon some of the effects of light and shade and to meditate upon the subtleties of the visual world. I am a painter based in East London (Hackney). I have a small studio and work from arrangements of objects. I usually base my ideas around disposable items, fabric and plastic/containers. Referencing a number of artists from different periods I tend to work from direct observation and use a limited palette. I also sometimes employ and create carefully corriographed photographs and use a camera obscura for compositional purposes. Subjects are selected for their reduced colour. I am interested in ambiguous arrangements of objects and spatial illusion.
