ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Through combining what I experience in my environment like The Sandias, desert vistas, and deep blue skies with what comes from my subconscious I am exploring the sensations of pleasure and pain. This piece, however, seems to be taking on a life of its own, whose meaning may only be revealed through time. As much as I try to be intentional about my creative process, it always seems like the art is actually the one driving.

A biologist gone rogue, I am now answering a deeper calling to the creative life. Although I began my undergraduate career with a focus in fine art, a curiosity in the troubled human condition led me to pursue a bachelors in Biomedical Science. After graduating, I continued to entertain the idea of finding a career in the field of science; I took a laboratory technician position in a genomics lab, completed a year of study towards becoming an naturopathic doctor and taught as a teaching assistant for the Introduction to Biology course at University of Washington. After a decade of searching for meaning and purpose through work in the sciences, I realized the one practice that consistently brought me fulfillment and connection to the present moment was painting. Drawn back to the southwest for the expansive skies and desert vistas that have long inspired my artwork and provide me the space to express myself, I settled down in Albuquerque where I was born. Here, I allowed myself to release the socially informed expectations that I would pursue a career in science and focus on painting. I have slowly started committing the necessary time to produce more complete sets of work, and have shown in local establishments such as Little Bear Coffee, Casa Vieja, Matrix Fine Art and Old Town Herbal. I am currently studying with Kimberly Brooks to build a strong foundation in oil painting without solvents and embracing the idea of building a life with art as a focus and the vector to bring positive change to the world.
