About The Artwork
In creating ‘Pondering the Mona Lisa’, I have aimed to bring a modern, nuanced approach to traditional portraiture of authoritative figures. Napoleon sought to have himself portrayed as a great emperor, recalling Julius Caesar. As such he is portrayed here with a tablet of Ramesses, documents on his war in Spain, and a tiger pelt. However, Napoleon is sat, with his uniform undone, and is not in a position of authority over the viewer. In fact, he is himself lost in thought looking towards Da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa, which he possessed for a short time.
