ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This symbolism communicates our human connection with nature and the spiritual world. I am attracted to the poppy flower; its fleeting blooms amaze me with its delicate petals. To me, they symbolize life and loss. Joan Donaldson and John Van Voorhees, co-owners and operators of Pleasant Hill Farm in Fennville, began planting the four-acre poppy field in memory of their adopted son, Mateo, whom they lost to suicide in February 2015. This glorious field of flowers has inspired many beautiful works of art.
