Portrait of a Boy: In this painting we can see that a boy has wrapped himself in a white bed sheet of which one end is twisted and worn around the neck. His playfulness and ingenuity in fashioning costumes like an Arabian with available means so as to impersonate a dignitary posing for a portrait is at the core of the work. His straight gaze holds the attention of the spectator. However, on the other hand the artist intelligently sets the subject against a backdrop which looks like the scaly hide of a crocodile adding a tinge of peculiarity to the ambience. In contrast to the swiftly applied white colour of the bed sheet, the face of the boy is rendered gently showing an amused expression. This reveals the artist’s calibre to capture the character of the subject.
