Upon first impression it is merely a play on surface and space, toying with preconceived notions of image depth, inviting the viewer to question what is real and what is not. The sky, which assumes infinite depth, transforms to be a flat surface because of the hole. And by continuing the image around onto the sides of the canvas, the painting itself is transformed into a three dimensional form, thereby inciting in the viewer an automatic assumption of internal volume. However, the meaning is gleaned not from the visual trickery. It is the shape of the hole, and the implicit actions of the zipper mechanism itself, that is all-important. For the zipper mechanism implies knowledge with the viewer that at a certain point a circular hole will start to re-close itself. The action thus becomes eternal, forever exposing and then closing the wound. And so the question becomes, what is Honesty? At what point do the truth and the illusion exchange? Or are they both in a constant state of flux? Pure is a series that explores humanity in an unconventional way. On the surface they could be seen as just moody skies. But to dismiss them so would be to miss the point: the clouds provide each painting a grounding in reality, but their main purpose is to provide a linking yet changing backdrop against which complex foreground dramas unfold. Unusually, with these paintings the titles are as important as the works themselves, as they alert the viewer to the fact that they are not witnessing merely a scene, but that each is a quirky metaphor for a particular personality characteristic. With the combination of title and image, deeper meanings emerge, triggering the opening chapters to an endless array of stories the viewer is invited to create.

Australia
Matthew was featured in BRW as one of Australia's top 50 artists. In the past few years he's won, or been a finalist for, more than 70 major national art awards. He's had 14 solo and 80 group shows. He's painted all his life but allowed himself to be distracted by other careers, working variously as a lecturer, art-director, photographer & writer. His first novel was short-listed for the Vogel Literary Award. He's lived in Australia, the UK, Portugal & Malaysia, and once camped for several months beneath a grand piano. He spent nights under stars in India, under-ground in Bolivia, under surveillance in Burma and under-nourished in London. His scariest moment was having machine-gun shoved in his face during Nepalese anti-monarchy riots, although crashing a para-glider into a forest was also something of a highlight.
