ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a figurative painting depicting a woman lying in a slightly contorted position on a purple blanket. Her head is tucked into her chest in such a way that it appears she may not have a head at all and her hands reach back onto her shoulders. This painting was inspired by the dramatic colors and values of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. It was created by me in the fall of 2018 while I was studying painting at the University of Arts London.

My name is Caitlin Southwick and all I've ever wanted to do was paint. I am a contemporary painter who lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts. My style is characterized by intense, saturated colors and bold value differentiations. Until recently, I ran operations for a Boston based nonprofit. The work was fulfilling, but I became gradually more desperate to be painting. In November of 2020, I made the terrifying choice to move away from my salaried position and into the intimidating world of professional art. From a young age, making things has been my primary passion. New clothes would soon become covered in paint and marker, art supply shops were my favorite place to visit, and I would tell anyone who would listen all about how someday I was going to be a professional artist. I attended Trinity College and graduated in 2020 with a dual degree in studio art and sociology. As a result of the pandemic, I have yet to show my senior thesis in studio art, a collection of narrative paintings titled "Face Value" to anyone in person. My first goal as an artist is to find a way to show the work and instillation that I was so excited to display back in March of 2020. Though I've not had any major shows yet, my dreams are ambitious and I plan to work hard to establish myself as a creative and reliable partner in the arts. I hope you'll follow along as I progress and make mistakes along the way.
