ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Quadruped' plays with the concepts of life versus imitation, of human versus animal, of artefact versus nature. A woman walks on all fours, high heels serving as absurd 'hooves'. In the foreground a caravan of plastic animals echo her pose and serve to give her an apparently giant stature. Her gaze meets the viewer's with an ironic look. I wanted to explore the way we engage with the world, protected by and embedded in a massive carapace of synthetic items that may well engulf us

Always the human - a source of fascination to be endlessly revisited. The people in my paintings are so often poised in abeyance, questioning, balanced in a world of absurdity or the bizarre. Some are more conventional - portraits or figure drawings - but the thread is constant: I seek the pulse of life in my art. My paintings are densely worked in oil on canvas. Whilst at a distance they appear realistic, in proximity they are built from rich texture and spontaneous marks, in places thick with paint. For me painting is a way to attain a state of mind beyond works, and to ignite this same experience in th viewer. Originally from Harrogate, N.Yorshire, I came to London to study Fine Art at St Martin's and have lived here ever since. I've won several awards including The Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize 2018 and the Judges' Choice at The Chaiya Art Awards 2021. I've also been shortlisted for numerous prize shortlists.
