About The Artwork

The main character is surrounded by natural and graphic elements. All of them are related to Christopher Marlowe: handwritten letters, own signature, roses bearing his name and symbols of some of his main plays. Who are the two main characters? Rather than being specific characters, they stand more for allegories, and / or characters inspired by his life and or / plays. The main point is more about what they express than who they are. As usual, the painting is a mixture of techniques and fabrics: a life, or any story, remains a mixing of facts and stories.

I work on the contemporary western male identity. Today, it is seen as a blured and moving area. This phenomenon mainly results from the current changes in terms of relationships between men and women, and the raise of the genders questions. Thus, its artistic representation is in need for being experimented. It is about examining how it stays in line with the models of the past while escaping them. Evaluating its historical part of violence and its new fragile one, which both stir and transform it. To this end, I often recycle manhood archetypes (the soldier, the boxing fighter, the mythological hero...) to put them in resonance with the emotions spread by today's medias, adverts and online social networks. In addition to choosing a figurative and expressionist style, I frequently integrate pieces of clothes in my creative process. Not only as an heritage from modern art, but also to provide a deeper and more concrete dimension to the identity matter.
