ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Raymond Johnson was at one time an actor in Hollywood, playing in Dirty Harry, and Space is the Place (with Sun Ra), and other bit parts. he migrated to San francisco, and eventually to Hilo, Hawaii in 1987. Ray was a most beloved figure, walking to town every day to socialize. and enjoy folks. He was sometimes jovially referred to as ʻDa Mayor of Hiloʻ. He came to model for life drawing classes, being the most colorful character he is. I gave him this portrait and he loved it. It was by his bedside in the hospital when he passed on. It was immediately afterward sold into the collection of Jerry Warren and Ingrid Fregeau, both being great friendʻs of Ray. The original work has a marvelous home.
