About The Artwork

In my early thirties and into my forties I spent time at the Awhitu Peninsular. The rainbow shoreline colours were taken from what a rainbow symbolises; faith, hope and peace. More recently the rainbow is used to symbolise moments and movements of social change. The rocky outcrop of rock and the rocks on the coast are to symbolise that we all have things to get over in our lives, but the lighthouse will shine and show us the way. The sailboat is the journey and adventure, it’s what a lot of us are yearning for. It is the “breath of life,” as the boat is primarily carried forward by the wind. The west coast of New Zealand is known for its dark iron sand and wild wind-swept coastline. This painting takes me back there and the Lighthouse at the Manukau Heads. Many lives were lost over the years for boats navigating the treacherous sandbar. In New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster 158 years ago, 189 seamen perished on the HMS Orpheus from the 259 crew onboard. The lighthouse gives us a beacon of hope. The flax in the right bottom corner is the New Zealand native flax, known by the Māori as harakeke. Every part was utilised extensively for medicine, traditional clothing, ropes, nets, weaving, nectar and to repair broken bones. The harakeke (flax) plant has a significance for Māori, it represents the whānau (family), the rito (shoot) is the child, who is protectively surrounded by the awhi rito (parents). The outside leaves represent the tūpuna (grandparents and ancestors). It has gold leaf in the sea and rocks. Plus impasto texture.

Trish has always had an artistic streak, making decorative candle holders, furniture and other artefacts. Her friends would ask her to make some for them also. In 2018 Trish was diagnosed with breast cancer and through her subsequent journey, she rekindled her artistic purpose and began painting. She likes to paint using bright colours and things which give her joy. All her paintings are intuitive from the heart and are the product of many many hours of painstaking work, and many layers. Trish loves textures and currently paints in acrylic with glazing on canvas using a variety of techniques, such as impasto or sgraffito, and also often includes gold leaf or other materials. "Bright happy colours and the colours of nature inspire me the most. I like to push my art and I am trying to create my own style. I let the painting talk to me and intuitively direct me to paint freely what my emotions want to express. Painting is my happy place and I hope you see this in my artwork. It’s not unusual for me to dream how I would like to paint a painting and I often pour these dreams and emotions onto the canvas. Each painting has a point where the canvas and paint have an intuitive synergy and through the language of art, it seems to communicate with me. Each painting tends to tell a story, which is unique to me, but I feel it can be easily understood by all. I mostly use acrylic golden paints, medium and sometimes inks. I work layer after layer, creating transparencies, revealing beautiful textures and design elements. I want you to be able to see, but also feel the artwork, as it’s a collaboration of sight and touch. I strive to create an ethereal element, that makes the viewer look deeper into the picture. My artwork evokes joy and I want you to feel the joy that I feel when you look at this painting. It’s an invitation into the works of my emotions, which are unique, joyous, passionate and full of energy. It is my take on abstract expressionism.
