About The Artwork

When I lived in Edinburgh …. I lived in the heart of The Old Town on Victoria Street, the steep cobbled road which links The Royal Mile to The GrassMarket. Victoria Street is an ambient laneway lined with restaurants and colourful shop fronts. It is a world set apart, and its environment is steeped in the energy of historical muggings, hangings, haunting, and murders. The gradient of this quaint ancient slip road is steep. It is mounted on either side with high buildings which tower over unsuspecting pedestrians, threatening to intimidate them with daunting intensity. On one side of the street stands Victoria Terrace, which disconcertingly allows passers- by to gaze into the top floor window of the flats opposite. Walking along this precipitous path, even the most unobservant tourist is confronted with the majestic height and impressive curve of the West Bow. It is impossible to climb Victoria Street musing at the shop windows laden with antiques, secondhand books or the latest ethnic outfit, without the accompanying sense that a loose slate might career from the precipitous buildings above. This is rendered more than a paranoid imagining by the wind tunnel effect, notorious amidst the Wynds and closes of Old Town Edinburgh. Victoria Street is found just below George IV Bridge, a busy road which crosses the Royal Mile, and connects The Mound leading up from Princes Street with the University Buildings, and various training hospitals. This unique street offers an instant impression of depth and serenity. Despite its noisy cobblestones, busy Aztec Indian craft shops, cafes, and nightclub venues, it possesses the peace which commonly emanates from an ancient monument.
