ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The title Red Figure refers to the vibrantly red background first then the emerging birdlike figure second. As though falling out of flight, it appears to be blowing white smoke or a cloud from its beak, symbolizing a language and message we cannot understand. The striking focal point of the abstracted figure features skeletal extensions at its crown. The movement in the piece is significant and has defined levels of depth. There is an appealing translucency about the background, as opposed to the heavy, imposing foreground found in the figure. In the middle, the activity stemming in and around the two represents the exact midpoint of depth between these two polarities. Custom lacquered pine frame and mounting hardware included.

Maddy Kaudy is a St. Paul-based painter and printmaker. She believes that the experience of art is a celebration of our humanness. The full spectrum of this encounter begins with what she derives as an artist in the process of creating. The cycle is completed once the audience brings work to its final culmination with the acts of viewing, interacting, and reacting. This contact is fluid through time, and though her works are forged by her hands, they draw on her internalization of the spiritual nature of shared humanity. This continually evolving exchange allows both artist and viewer to learn about one another and the self via shared experience in this temporary existence. Maddy believes in the infinite nature of expression and her vocation is to act as conduit between a driving artistic force outside of the self and the people who make up her audience. Her responsibility is to bring original works into physical manifestation and to share fearlessly and with gratitude.
