ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Mixed media abstract painting on canvas: acrylic, graphite, paper, oil, pastel, pencil, ink, pva This was inspired by a trip to the Isle of Skye and a hike up one of its most beautiful mountains over looking the Cuillin ridge. The day didn't go to plan and I didn't make it to the top...this painting acts as my own sort of personal visual CBT- reimagining the hike in a more palatable rosy tint! Shereen Tabet (b.1985) is a Scottish Lebanese abstract expressionist artist from Glasgow, now based in Clapton, London. Mostly self taught, her practice explores an obsession with colour, light, texture and layering, through mixed media painting. Acrylic, oil, caulker, pencils and pastels are applied using various adapted household tools and brushes. Her work incorporates subtle use of pattern and softer pastel tones, juxtaposed with fragments of bold mark making and heavy lines. With recurring themes of heritage, motherlands, femininity and relationships, Shereen has an interest in how our memory interprets past experiences, people and places, often including locations she feels deeply connected to through family ties and love, including Glasgow, Beirut, Mayo, London. Her paintings reflect the nature of our memories: vague, fleeting, at times interspersed with moments of clarity and lucidity, displaying sometimes joyful recollections, other times evoking a sense of nostalgia and melancholy. 'Movement, dance and music creation have always been a big part of my life and I feel this energy and creative fluidity is reflected in my painting process. I work with mixed media, from acrylic to pastel, caulker and clay and like to apply these using my own adapted tools, brushes and my fingers, interacting with the canvas, feeling the resistance, allowing for a more tactile experience. I enjoy getting physical with the canvas, scratching and etching into the layers of paint. I love the playfulness and unpredictability of painting, witnessing what emerges on the canvas, sometimes suggestions of people, times & places, occasionally more vivid representations, changing with the light and layers of paint over time, as I try to capture the feeling in my head’
