ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is part of a new series exploring portraits and the figure.I have been looking at a lot of Renaissance paintings lately and for years have been fascinated by exploring fabric in my paintings. My background is in fiber and so my interest in the way fabric moves, what it contains, and all the assoications we have of it historically and for utility creep up in the work. All of my work explores nature and the human connection to the natural world. I am drawn to visual and psychological tension of sorts and revel in contrasts. I attempt to layer images visually as we hear sound in our daily lives. Incongruous sounds enter and exit our space without our consent resulting in a tapestry of song that needs no composer. We encounter the world visually in the same way, but mostly in a blur, unconscious and un-awake. As an artist, I want to harness the stillness of this moving picture in an effort to arrest and move the viewer in some way. All of my work is watercolor and ink on rice paper mounted on cradleboard and ready to hang. There is no glass. The surfaces are fixed with a non-yellowing varnish. The frame work on the edges of all of my paintings are painted in acrylic as a "mock" frame and ready to hang as is, or framed differently as you wish.

I have been making art in one form or another for over 40 years. As a visual artist and also a writer, I love playing with words as well as color and form. Since 2012, I have lived in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where the surreal atmosphere and sensuous colors have worked their way into my paintings. The last few years have found me making art in different parts of the world, most recently at art residencies in Spain and France.
