Vincenzo Mistretta, a multifaceted artist and filmmaker was born in the city of Palermo in Sicily, Italy. He has carved his own style in the world of visual storytelling and fine arts. With a career spanning decades, his artistic journey has encompassed diverse mediums, from painting to film, and his work has been showcased internationally. Mistretta embarked on his artistic odyssey at Pratt Institute in New York City, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. During his time at Pratt, he delved into the world of Fine Arts, including painting, sculpture, and film. Mistretta’s paintings are constructed from many layers of surface, each surface gradually cracking or splitting to reveal a glimpse of what lies beneath. In this way, time itself becomes an element of each painting, as these scarred surfaces reveal the history of their own creation. Another crucial element in his work is chance—both genuine randomness and unpredictability, but also the illusion of chance, controlled somewhat by the way he combines particular materials to create a surface that seems natural. As natural as though it were responding to time, light, cold, and heat: aging and changing just as a human body would.
