About The Artwork

One of the more common tropes of comic books (and their film adaptations) is the superhero living a dual identity, whereby he masks his ‘real’ super heroic self behind a separate persona living a normal, everyday life. Often these secondary identities are those of relatively ordinary people, such as bumbling reporter Clark Kent (Superman), or high school student Peter Parker (Spiderman). Always one of the most dramatic moments in the comics and films is when Kent, Parker and so on, called upon to battle evil, rip open their outer layer of clothes to reveal the superhero beneath. But what if the superhero persona isn’t the real identity at all, but a mask to conceal a quite normal person? So in this painting the usual scenario is reversed. The superhero rips open his spandex costume to reveal his true secret self - an ordinary man.

Patrick Lee was born in Clacton-on-Sea, England in 1972. His interests and influences include cinema, science fiction, ufology, cryptozoology, the paranormal, Fortean phenomena, conspiracy theories and psychedelic music. "I come from a very creative family. My mother is bestselling novelist Maureen Lee and my older brother Dave (aka Joey Negro) is a renowned DJ and producer. It was only in 2015 that I began to paint full-time." "My paintings tend to be a twist on something familiar, a weird or unusual concept, or simply an image or idea that I find interesting. I want my paintings to be a talking point rather than simply something pretty to hang on the wall."
