ABOUT THE ARTWORK

When I went to college I was mostly drinking beer my first couple years in between going to class. One of the people in my dorm noticed that I was tall and asked if I might want to try out for the crew team at our college (Grand Valley State). I looked down at my expanding stomach (from my beer intake) and figured I had better do something to exercise. This was the best decision I ever made. I fell in love with this sport. Not only did I get in the best shape of my life, I learned valuable life lessons. This sport epitomizes teamwork. One person in the boat (shell) can stop momentum, but if everyone is pulling together and in sync, it is a powerful, amazing feeling. It is a beautiful sport to compete in and watch.

I started painting late in life, approximately three years ago, after I had a conversation with my nephew, who was attending college for an art degree at the time. Dennis Collins, my nephew, is a very talented artist and I am a fan of his. He was nice enough to pass on in one of our conversations that his favorite art professor used to say that any painting is good and that you shouldn't worry about the outcome. It is an expression of the individual doing that artwork. After that conversation, I figured what the heck, I will go for it. So now my favorite thing on weekends, is to get up early in the morning, crank on my favorite rock and roll music and just go for it. I usually come out of a "painting frenzy blackout" - the good kind :), covered in paint after 3 or 4 hours, feeling great. I LOVE TO PAINT and am truly blessed that I found this passion/hobby.
