About The Artwork

Taken from a series of drawings and colour studies whilst in San Francisco- and in particular, one of several studies with views of the famous Alcatraz island which is the focal point for many of the compositions in and around highier points of the city. I have always be interested in cityscapes, and San Francisco in the perfect place to create compostions that contain many of the key elements that I am attracted too such as contrast, shadows, warm colours, shapes and leading lines. The influence of Bay area artists on my practice also made it an artistic pilgramge for me.

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
