The Art Anfractuous paintings are formal and spatial explorations fueled by the notion that embraces the immensity of the complexities of a being. Comprehending a foreign idea involves a distortion of meaning that breeds new ideologies and questions. This particular distortion interests me, and my paintings are explorations on similar lines. Anfractuous is a metaphor for a smooth mixture of ambiguities and ambivalence – like ethereal forms, juxtapositions, and multi-layered folds of meanings – that exists in perhaps every possible substance. The explorations wrap up these several frames and invite the spectator to experience them simultaneously. The paintings invite multiple points of view and traverse the ethereal boundaries between art and architecture, being and non-being, material and memory, expressions, and the presence of the inexpressible. The viewer is invited for a dynamic contemplation, taking a deeper dive, layer after layer, and becoming involved with the painting. The paintings attempt to impose a unique flow of energy, where the viewer’s gaze moves and glides through the canvas, subjecting them to a deeper inquiry. The works propose an experience designed to manifest the quality of the unknown and the infinite. They attempt to engage the mind in certain transformations involving the subjective experience of the spectator, leaving the spectator to discover it. It’s a journey both ways. Taking a deeper dive into something ambiguous, multi-dimensional, and multi-layered, leaving the current reality and forms of relations and comprehension behind. Art Anfractuous is the confluence of the conscious and the subconscious. The whole act of the creative process informs the works. The workflow adopted embraces techniques and ideas like free-hand drawing, intuitive ideation, and subjectivity – I feel they are endangered species now, and I like to see them in action in my works.

Sovona Ghatak is an architect and artist currently based in New Delhi, India. Having founded her independently-run design studio, Space Anfractuous, she has professional experience across multiple disciplines and scales. Through her practice and research, Sovona is investigating the intersection of art, architecture, and philosophy. She has done various national and international collaboration and commission projects. Her Anfractuous paintings and prints are shipped worldwide and have traveled to many cities including London, New York, Mumbai, Richmond, Ahemdabad, etc. Her body of work is fueled by the notion that embraces the immensity of the complexities of a being or object. She believes that complex systems like architecture should not be immured in one definite thing, and the architectural explorations should go beyond the idea of ‘either-or’ and embrace the idea of ‘and-both’. Her works traverse the ethereal boundaries between art and architecture, being and non-being, material and memory. Sovona is an M.Arch II candidate at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design (2021-2023), Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has received her Bachelor of Architecture degree with Distinction from the MBS School of Planning and Architecture, GGSIPU in 2018.
