Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. Savanna elephants keep the savannas clear by eating shrubs and trees which helps the grass grow. This allows the many grazers on the savanna to survive. Also many other plants and animals would not survive in the woodland areas without them. Poaching and a habitat loss has caused the most serious damage to their populations, with approximately 25,000 being lost every year.
