About The Artwork

This painting forms part of a new collection of paintings on the theme of Climate Change and Extinction. I was very moved by David Attenborough's documentary on Extinction that recently aired on TV and it is these themes that I am addressing in my current body of work. 'Scorched' is made with thick, impasto oil paint, built up over a long period of time and with each layer drying before a new layer is added. The surface is therefore very furrowed and textured; the history and texture is rich and many colours can be glimpsed beneath the surface. In this collection, I am responding in a visceral way to the outcomes of Climate Change and in this case, I refer to temperature rise and the effects of temperature rise on the environment. 'Scorched' could refer to land after the fires in Australia and the Amazon. The colours are hot and the predominant surface colour is metallic Copper.
