ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by the later works and series of unfinished pieces of JMW Turner c.1845. His unexhibited paintings reworking his monochrome landscape prints inspired the colour work of this emotive piece. Lending to his later colour techniques, pure colours are used rather than contrasting tones expressing the blazing light and energies of the sea as it sprays against the rocks at sunrise, capturing that first burst of energy in the Spring, as the sun warms your skin on a frosted morning. This work laid foundations within the depths of the palette in ochre and greys, building layers of paint, scraping and then overpainting creating the gradual build of pure colour, capturing sensory experiences by means of abstraction and colour. This piece is painting the light as it is caught in the soft sprays and the pure joy as the sun hits your face. Take a step back, and soak up the light.

KATI KAIA b. Hong Kong Born in Hong Kong, China. Kati spent her early childhood in Shouson Hill on Hong Kong Island’s steep slopes and palm trees of Deep Water Bay. Her family moved to the UK, where she studied art and has always loved painting and abstract mark making from an early age, being influenced by Asia, love of Japanese Art and the light touches of English painters such as Turner. She received her BA (Hons) from Ravensbourne in 2005 and continued her study with The University of The Arts, London. Following a diverse career as a fashion designer and creative director of print, obsessing with print and colour work, she has worked for some of the world’s top luxury labels and international brands in London, New York and SE Asia. Her love of colour, combinations and expression draws her creative outlay to painting, where she can explore mark-making and colour field work, connecting to colour on a primal level and the roots of colour as an expression and connection without form - expressing stories of love, discord, war and peace through the form of colour alone to connect with the beholder and envelope in abstract movement.
