She Dances is a portrait of a vulva drawn from life. She is named after the folds of her hood and labia cascading in rhythmic folds. Yoni Art, In itself is a comment on societies idea of what is ‘normal’ and ‘attractive’ when it comes to genitalia within modern day culture. Oppression of the female body can be traced through history by looking at female representations in western art. The nude female has been depicted throughout the history of art: through the vision of the male. The female nude was designed to celebrate the woman in relation to the male, with the female sex organ omitted for the sake of decency whilst the male nude boldly shows the male genitalia in all its glory. The sacred female organ is omitted, and yet, the shapely curves of the rest of the body are on display to meet the idea of what is femininity from the perspective of the male. This is also known as ‘the male gaze’. Yoni Art is an empowerment of the body for the owner of the Yoni. It is smashing the beauty standards set for what is beautiful and normal when it comes to genitalia. A full-powered stance on the oppression of sexuality and gender, Yoni art depicts the yoni in all its majestic beauty, mystery and uniqueness. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge that you do not need to identify as female, or have been born female, to celebrate, love and connect with the Yoni through Yoni art.

I am a feminist artist exploring, sexuality, beauty, queer culture and the natural world. My artworks combine elements of drawing and painting and I take my time to explore the textures and layers of paint on the substrate. By using use emotive, saturated colour and gradients of light, I aim to create an essence of the divine in my work. I make art that acknowledges the super power and life giving properties of the Yoni, and life within the female experience. My work responds to societal erasure, censorship and the impact of the patriarchy on the lives of those who identify as female. I desire to empower the viewer and influence their perception of beauty by encouraging them to seek a viewpoint outside of the orthodox social constructs. When people experience my work, I want them to experience beauty and divinity, not erotic objectification or sexualization of the vulva.
