ABOUT THE ARTWORK

She's in bloom was inspired by the shape and form of the vulva, and it's likeness to petals on a bloom. The vulva has been omitted throughout art history. The penis has commonly been displayed in sculpture and paintings or drawings, but the vulva and labia are more often than not, hidden from the viewer. Forward to today and the labia is still limited from view. Common pornography magazines display the vulva edited with the inner labia removed due to decency laws. The desirable vulva for magazines shows no inner labia at all, the woman is censored. Today we find the largest growing cosmetic surgery procedure for women is labiaplasty. A invasive surgery that sees the labia removed from the vagina, in order to look the the ’ideal’ woman, one with no visible vulva or labia, just like in common pornography. My work is about the vulva, showing it's difference and beauty. Just like the petals of the iris, each is unique and perfect in its difference. This watercolour comes framed, and signed on the front and back.

I am a feminist artist exploring, sexuality, beauty, queer culture and the natural world. My artworks combine elements of drawing and painting and I take my time to explore the textures and layers of paint on the substrate. By using use emotive, saturated colour and gradients of light, I aim to create an essence of the divine in my work. I make art that acknowledges the super power and life giving properties of the Yoni, and life within the female experience. My work responds to societal erasure, censorship and the impact of the patriarchy on the lives of those who identify as female. I desire to empower the viewer and influence their perception of beauty by encouraging them to seek a viewpoint outside of the orthodox social constructs. When people experience my work, I want them to experience beauty and divinity, not erotic objectification or sexualization of the vulva.
