Once upon a time there was a Karbi girl called Sintu. She noticed that the Karbis were covering their bodies with leaves and barks of trees. She felt pity. So she created Phelo (Cotton) and Engki Ahon (Silk) and wove clothes for the Karbis. Henceforth, she is called Peh-Arnam, the first Goddess of Textiles. This is a popular Karbi mythology story which I had been hearing since my childhood. The Karbis are a small mongoloid tribe living in the heart of North-Eastern India in Assam. The daily life of a Karbi girl is very much connected with the textiles. It is a tradition that every Karbi girl learns to weave. In my childhood, I too learnt weaving with strips of banana tree barks.

I am an art lover and artist from a small tribe of the Karbis, who are habituated in the north-eastern parts of India. I take most of my inspiration from my tribal traditions, and the nature loving culture that I belong to. Hence many of my works include traditional Karbi motifs as well as natural motifs. I also take inspiration from some western artists like Matisse but try to interpret the ideas with my own ways of doing art. I mostly work in terms of paintings, textile works and collage works.
