ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was inspired by a photo of my sister in-law holding a toy bird, this began an ongoing series of figures holding soft toys. As a painter I'm interested in the comparison between the human element in the painting and the toy which are brought to the same level through the medium of paint. I hope the viewer will enjoy the peaceful colours and sense of humour in the painting. I chose the medium of wet on wet acrylic applied very quickly with fast fluid brush strokes leaving on show part of the painted under sketch.

James Lang (b.1987, London) currently lives and works in London having recently returned from Beijing after almost 5 years. He graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 2011 and Camberwell College of Art in 2013 with an MA in Illustration. Living in China was a transformative experience. The distance made him feel closer to the culture he left behind. This led to a series of works inspired by British history and culture. His paintings are inspired by medieval art, literature and a fondness for childhood cartoons and vintage colouring book images. The paintings are often thickly layered, ranging from brightly coloured pop art to blurry monochrome images, Varying in sentiment between innocence and satire.
