"The Sorceress Queen overlooks her undead subjects as they bring her offerings of music, dance and skulls." One Day, a couple was moving out of the house next door from me. They asked me if I wanted a couch. I said no... but I’ll take that painting from you. It was a large painting on canvas, pretty amateurish (hence it being abandoned on the sidewalk). Straight out of the tube colours, thick sloppy brushwork, and a big gold piece of paper glued to the centre of it, which is what inspire me. Took forever to get the paper off, and once it was all primed over, it was a really interesting texture to work with. Bits of the glue that adhered the circle of paper to the canvas remained, and looked a lot like a halo, so that’s how the gold leaf was inspired. As for the skeletons, I went through all of Hans Holbein’s Danse Macabre (1523) and picked out all the fun ones and arranged them around the portrait before engraving them into the painting. If you look closely, you can actually see the bluish green and red coming through from the painting underneath. This painting is one of the largest paintings I’ve ever done at approximately four by five feet. Fun to work on, but awfully hard to store, so somebody please buy it!
